När man pratar om datorföretag finns det två namn som allt som oftast dyker upp, Steve Jobs och Bill Gates. Två passionerade tekniknördar och datorpionjärer med stor känsla för entreprenörskap som skulle komma att bli två av världens mest framgångsrika företagsledare. Steve Jobs i form av grundare och ägare av Apple och Bill Gates som medgrundare och ägare av Microsoft.

William Henry ”Bill” Gates III, föddes i Seattle, USA, den 28 oktober 1955. Han är son till William H. Gates, som var en framstående advokat, och Mary Gates som var styrelsemedlem i First Interstate Bank och United Way. Bill Gates gick i högstadiet i Lakeside School där hans främsta skolämnen var naturorienterande ämnen och matematik. Det var också här hans intresse för datorer väcktes.

Klassens gemensamma dator – det första projektet


När Gates gick i åttonde klass köpte klassmammorna in en dator till skolans elever. Datorn kom från en loppmarknad och Gates nyfikenhet väckte för programmeringsspråket BASIC. Hans lärare såg hans intresse och lät Gates arbeta med datorn under mattelektionerna. När skolan fick nya datorer hittade några elever säkerhetsbrister i datorsystemet vilket gjorde att skolan förbjöd eleverna att nyttja datorerna under sommarlovet. Bill Gates och hans vänner Paul Allen och Rick Weiland och Kent Evans erbjöd sig att leta upp fler säkerhetsbrister i systemet, för att på sätt få tillgång till datorerna även på sommaren. Gates fick gå en kurs för att lära sig de olika programmens källkod. När de var 14 år gamla skapade Bill Gates och Paul Allen ett datorprogram som de tjänade 20 000 dollar på det första året. När någon avslöjade deras ålder gick affärerna sämre för duon. 1973 började Bill Gates på Harvard University och där lärde han känna Steve Ballmer som skulle bli hans framtida affärspartner.väcktes.

I början av 1975 läste Gates en artikel som handlade om Altair 8800 och kontaktade datorns utvecklare MITS. Utan att de ens hade börjat skriva koden för en BASIC-interpretator till Altair 8800, provad Gates om han kunde väcka MITS intresse. Företagets chef Ed Roberts, sa ja och bokade ett möte med Gates och hans vänner för en demonstration. Bara några veckor före mötet skulle äga rum började vännerna skriva programkoden, utvecklade en Altair-emulator som de körde på en minidator samt en BASIC-interpretator. Det resulterade i att de fick lansera interpretatorn som Altair Basic och att Paul Allen anställdes av MITS. Gates tog ledigt från studierna på Harvard (han hoppade senare av utbildningen helt) för att jobba tillsammans med Allen på MITS. I oktober 1975 startade de handelsbolaget Micro-soft som ett år senare döptes om till Microsoft. I början av 1976 skrev Bill Gates ett brev som han skickade till datorentusiaster vari han försäkrade att det fanns en kommersiell marknad för datormjukvara och han ansåg också att mjukvara inte skulle vara tillåtet att kopiera utan tillstånd. Då var det få som trodde på att det skulle fanns något kommersiellt intresse för mjukvara. Ingenting skulle visa sig vara mer fel för från 1980-talet och framåt skulle Microsoft växa och bli ett av de ledande företagen inom branschen och göra Bill Gates till världens näst rikaste man.

Bill Gates äger fortfarande Microsoft men har lämnat det dagliga arbetet för att arbeta med stiftelsen Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation på heltid. Stiftelsen har donerat stora summor till bland annat hjälp till barn som lider av HIV/aids, sponsrat WHO:s försök att utrota polio och skapat stipendier på minoritetstäta skolor i USA.
