Jamie Oliver föddes och växte upp i engelska Clavering där hans föräldrar Trevor och Sally Oliver hade en kombinerad pub/restaurang, The Cricketers. Oliver inledde sin karriär som kock genom att arbeta i föräldrarnas kök och laga mat tillsammans med dem.
Inledde karriären hos en italiensk kock
Sitt första jobb som kock hade Jamie Oliver hos Antionio Carluccio, ägare till Neal Street restaurant. Oliver fick bygga upp sina kunskaper genom att förbereda italienska ratter och det var även här han lärde känna sin mentor Gennaro Contaldo. Contaldo arbetade senare för Oliver när han startade sin restaurangkedja som går under namnet Jamie´s Italian.
Nästa steg i karriären blev som sous-chef på The River Café i Fulham. Det var också här som BBC upptäckte den unge kocken med ett stort humoristiskt sinne 1997. Två år senare hade Olivers första TV-show The Naked Chef premiär och hans kokbok med samma namn gick upp i toppen på bokförsäljningslistan i Storbritannien. Samma år bli Oliver även inbjuden till premiärministerbostaden på 10 Downing Street för att göra lunch till dåvarande premiärministern Tony Blair.Efter tre säsonger med TV-showen The Naked Chef gick Jamie Oliver över från BBC till Channel 4, där hans första programserie blev en dokumentär kallad Jamies Kitchen. I serien startades den första Fifteen restaurangen upp och man gjorde det med hjälp av ungdomar som av olika anledningar hade hamnat lite snett i livet. Fifteen restaurangen vid Westland Place i London, tar fortfarande in och lär upp ungdomar som haft en krokig start på livet för att ge dem möjlighet till en karriär i restaurangbranschen.
Dokumentärserier med syfte att göra skillnad
2005 gjorde Jamie Oliver en dokumentärserie med syfte att få engelska skolor att servera bra och näringsrik mat till eleverna istället för hel- eller halvfabrikat. Resultatet blev att de brittiska politikerna fick upp ögonen för problemet och Oliver tilldelades utmärkelsen Most Inspriring Political Figure of 2005 av Channel 4s tittare. Jamie Olivers vilja att få fler att laga näringsrik mat på bra och rena råvaror ledde till nästa projekt, Jamie’s Ministry of Food, en tv-serier där Oliver reste runt i vanliga familjer i staden Rohterham i Yorkshire för att hjälpa och lära dem att laga bra mat. Därefter begav sig Oliver över Atlanten för att ta sig an den amerikanska befolkningen och lära dem att äta bättre och minska ner på snabbmaten.
Jamie Oliver har väckt mycket känslor genom åren och blivit hårt kritiserad, inte minst för att han under inspelningarna av sin liveshow visade publike hur det går till när kycklingar och hönor slaktas. Tillsammans med en annan välkänd brittisk kock, Gordon Ramsay, är Oliver talesperson för The Big Fish Fight som verkar för ett hållbart fiske.
